Clerk gets jail, cane for theft of £60
MAZY SWEDI, a former employee of the National Agricultural Products Board at Changtombe, was yesterday sentenced to two years' imprisonment and 24 strokes by a Dar es Salaam Senior Resident Magistrate, Mr. B.H. Rahim, after he had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £60 while a public servant.
Inspector Ahmed Nasser, for the prosecution, told the court that the accused was employed by the N.A.P.B. as a dispatch clerk. His duties included the dispatching of mail and he was usually given cash with which to pay for the postage.
Inspector Nasser added that during December last year and January this year, his record book was checked and found to be in order. In January and February Swedi's entries in the register were not checked but when they were checked on April 1, a loss of £60 was discovered.
The accused admitted having used the money. Nothing was recovered.
