In these various pictures, all apparently from around a century ago, it is interesting to note the consistency of method. In every case the culprit has been tied, lying flat face down, to a low bench. His trousers have been lowered and the punishment is being administered to the bare buttocks with some kind of cane. It was apparently done in a public place - which is clearly part of the explanation why so many photographs of these events survive.
