Youth gets 15 years in jail, caning for attempted rape, robbery
A smiling Obrayain is led away after sentencing.SIBU: A youth was yesterday afternoon convicted of attempted rape and robbery by the Sessions Court here and was sentenced to a total of 15 years' jail and four strokes of the rotan.
Obrayain Mccertny Jim Jerry, 22, of Simunjan pleaded guilty to the two charges.
For the first charge of attempted rape, Sessions Court judge Caroline Bee Majanil sentenced him to seven years' jail and two strokes of the rotan.
For the second charge of robbery, she imposed an eight-year jail sentence and two strokes of the rotan.
She ordered that the sentences to run consecutively.
According to the facts of the case, Obrayain attempted to rape a 25-year-old girl in a room on the first floor of a building at 6.07am on Oct 24, while for the second charge he robbed the victim of items including a smartphone and cash.
On Oct 24 about 11pm at a rented room in Pahlawan Lane, a team of police searched the premises and found one male who attempted to escape.
He was subsequently arrested and various items believed to be stolen were seized.
Based on the police investigation, the accused committed an offence under Section 376 of the Penal Code read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code for attempted rape, and Section 394 Penal Code for robbery.
