Naughty boys to get 3 strokes

By Metro Reporter

TWO Harare teenagers shall forever regret their thieving habits after they were sentenced to three strokes of the cane each for stealing goods from a moving vehicle.

The two boys last week pleaded guilty to jumping onto a moving truck and dropping goods before they alighted to collect their loot.

In passing sentence, Mbare magistrate Ms Jesca Kufa considered that the two, aged 13 and 14, were juveniles and that giving them a jail term at that tender age might turn them into hard-core criminals as they would be used to staying in jail.

Prosecutor Miss Fadzai Nyagwande said on May 4, Mr Dick Peter Rapembe was on his way home from work and driving along Harare Drive.

The two boys, who are of no fixed abode, spotted him and jumped onto the back of his Mazda pick-up truck without being noticed by Mr Rapembe.

Whilst in the back of the car, the boys dropped a tyre, two litres of cooking oil, dishwasher and a bar of washing soap.

The pair jumped off and fled into a nearby bush.

A Good Samaritan along the way alerted Mr Rapembe who then stopped his car and managed to catch the two boys before handing them over to the police.

In mitigation, the boys said they wanted to use the goods for their living since they had no one to take care of them.

17-Year-Old Rapist Sentenced to Caning

A 17-YEAR OLD boy who raped his five-year-old cousin during a fishing expedition was yesterday spared from a custodial sentence after a Chitungwiza magistrate ruled that he be caned for the offence.

The teenager appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Mr Temba Kuwanda, who slapped him with a wholly suspended six-year jail term.

Prosecutor Ms Lorraine Rubaya said on March 11, 2005, the boy, who resides at Concordia Farm in Featherstone, was, together with his cousin, assigned a fishing task.

While at the river, the court heard, he asked his cousin to have sexual intercourse in return for the birds he had caught.

The boy then grabbed his cousin before forcing her to lie down on the ground and raping her once.

The girl narrated her ordeal to her mother, who reported the matter to the police.

The girl was taken to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, where a medical affidavit confirming the abuse was issued.
