Sharia Court Jails Man for Selling Dead Animal's MeatBy Ahmed Oyerinde
The Upper Sharia Court 11 yesterday in Sokoto State sentenced Mallam Sani Mamman to one year imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane for selling dead animal's meat to unsuspecting individuals in state.
Mamman, 25, was arrested in possession of the head of a dead cow, which he wanted to sell.
He was subsequently arraigned at the Upper Sharia Court 11 where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Mamman told the trial Sharia Court judge, Alhaji Sahabi Bawa Tawbraral, that he usually sold the meat of dead animals to unsuspecting members of the public.
Delivering judgement, Tawbraral said Mamman's action was against Islamic laws.
The sentence of 24 strokes of the cane was executed on the culprit at the court premises yesterday with a large crowd of people gathering to watch the scene.
In an interview shortly after administering the lashes on him, Mamman said he indulged in the business so as to earn his daily bread.
