Boy, 15, to get the rotan

Press cutting

IPOH, Sun.

SENTENCE of 18 months' imprisonment passed by a Sessions Court president on 15-year-old Abdul Manap bin Man, found guilty of housebreaking, was yesterday varied by Mr. Justice Thomson in the Supreme Court.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mr. M.G. Neal, said that the sentence was illegal as juvenile offenders could only be sent to prison if there was no other alternative.

In this instance, there was an approved school to which the boy could have been sent.

Varying the sentence, the Judge ordered eight strokes of the rotan and that the boy be released on a $500 bond being signed by his brother-in-law, who undertook to look after him, for two years.

The Judge also ordered three special conditions:

That the boy report to the penghulu of his kampong once a week;

That he report to the probation officer once a month;

That he carry out the directions of the probation officer.
