The School Cane.
Use in Queensland.
Retention Favoured.
BRISBANE, Thursday.
A memorandum was recently sent by the Minister for Education, Mr. Huxham, to the principals of the secondary schools, with a view to ascertaining the practice generally in regard to corporal punishment. Mr. Huxham stated this morning that replies had been received from 31 principals. These showed that no corporal punishment was administered in eight schools. In the remaining 33 corporal punishment was inflicted, in 15 of which the head teacher only administered corporal punishment. The consensus of opinion gathered from the replies was strongly in favour of its retention. Speaking generally, the experience of the various principals showed that corporal punishment was less frequent now than some years ago.
