Foreign teen gets jail, caning for statutory rape of girlfriend

KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced an Indonesian teenager to seven years in prison and three strokes of the rotan for the statutory rape of his underage girlfriend.
Heronimus Mikael, 18, pleaded guilty to the charge before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman, who ordered him to serve the custodial sentence immediately.
DPP Ahmad Fariz Abdul Hamid told the court the accused was arrested by the victim's family members after they discovered the couple planning to flee to Indonesia.
He was arrested around 3am July 29 last year at a house in Taman Malihah.
Police investigation revealed that the victim, who was then 14, was four months pregnant.
The victim has since given birth to a boy and a DNA test proved the accused is the biological father.
In mitigation, Heronimus told the court he planned to bring his girlfriend to his hometown to start a new life there.
He was previously ordered to undergo a dental check-up to determine his age as he did not have any form of identification.
