Dokolo Leader Calls for Caning in Schools

By Obell Phillips
Kampala

THE LC5 chairman of Dokolo district, JB Okello Okello, has asked teachers to cane their students in order to uplift the education standards in the area.

Okello Okello was addressing head teachers from 60 primary schools in the district recently. He said indiscipline and late-coming had partly led to the students' poor performance. "Every child who comes late must be caned two strokes and every time he or she misbehaves, they should get the same. This should continue without mercy," Okello Okello said.

Okello, who is also the district secretary for education, said he was upset by the recent Primary Leaving Examination results, where Dokolo got only 27 pupils in Division One.

Last year, 26 pupils scored Division One.

The head teachers supported the idea and agreed to comply, despite government policies banning corporal punishment in schools.
