Student gets 1 year, canes for robbery

A student of St. Francis Secondary School on William Street in Kampala, Ronald Sekitto has been sentenced to one year in prison and 12 canes on his own plea of guilt. Sekitto faced two counts of simple robbery.

Buganda Road court presided over by Grade I Magistrate, Charles Kisakye heard that the accused and others on Dec. 28, 1999 at Kyebando Katale zone robbed Richard Mukalazi of a television set, video camera and Radio.

The accused also met a one Kavuma and robbed him of his mobile phone.

Passing judgement, Kisakye said the accused should pay Shs 500,000 to Mukalazi and Shs 200,000 to Kavuma. He will also receive 12 strokes of the cane after completion of his term in jail. The magistrate said Sekitto should be under police supervision for one year and supposed to report to Kawempe police station every month.

The accused displayed a wound with puss running out and pleaded with court to pardon him but his request was turned down.

Married man shares hut with parents

Residents of Chagen II village in Kwapa sub-county, Tororo, were Jan. 21, shocked to learn that a 25-year-old man had been sharing a small grass thatched hut with his parents since he married two years ago.

James Elokit, a petty trader at Mvule trading centre is said to have married Rose Itata on December 17, 1998 and they have one child.

But he has never built a hut and shares one with his father, Sebastian Oprong, 53, and mother Kefina Atyang, 42.

LCs led by the chairman LC-I Venus Omoit, Jan. 21 arrested and handed them to clan leaders of Igoria Iukoto clan for traditional cleansing and disciplinary action.

The meeting chaired by clan chairman, Fabiano Ltyengino, resolved to demolish the hut, cane the culprits and fined them a black ram and black cock for the cleansing ritual.
