Dar resident is sentenced to 30 years jail and 12 strokes over rape

By Mwajabu Mleche

A resident of Dar es Salaam, Daniel Manga (29), was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment and 12 strokes by Ilala District Court in Dar es Salaam last week, after he was convicted of rape.

The magistrate, Samwel Maweda, said was that he satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence.

'The evidence by the prosecution witness has left no stone unturned in proving that the accused raped the girl,' said magistrate Maweda.

In mitigation, the accused asked the court to exercise leniency on him because he has dependants and also expects to marry at the end of this year.

The court, however, went ahead to give him a deterrent punishment, as earlier prayed for by the prosecution.

Earlier, a prosecution witness, Abdallah Salehe who is a medical officer at Amana Municipal Hospital in Ilala District within the City, had told the court the school girl alleged to have been raped had long lost her virginity.

'The examination revealed that the complainant had long lost her virginity and that it was not the first time she had had sex with a man,' said Dr. Salehe while delivering his testimony.

It was alleged that the accused raped a 12 year Uhuru Primary School pupil on May 27, this year at Ilala Sharifu Shamba in Ilala District within the City, causing her pains and psychological effects.
